Advanced Targeting Strategies

Effective targeting is the key to successful Instagram engagement. This guide shows you how to choose between Automatic and Manual targeting, and how to combine the available Manual options to reach your ideal audience.

Two Ways to Target

Influxie’s Engage tab offers two modes (see Configuring Engagement Settings):

  1. Automatic — Influxie finds audiences within your niche. You pick up to 5 content categories and the bot discovers relevant accounts for you.
  2. Manual — You specify the targets yourself using two targeting methods:
    • Specific Account targeting — reach the followers, following, or post-likers of accounts you name.
    • Hashtag targeting — reach users engaging with content under hashtags you choose (up to 20).

There is no location or geographic targeting in Influxie. If you previously planned strategies around cities or venues, replace them with hashtag and specific-account targeting instead.

Autosave: There is no Save button. Every field saves itself automatically about half a second after you stop editing. Any change only affects future sessions. Turning a section off wipes its data, so Influxie asks you to confirm first.

All action counts are per session, not per day. There is no daily limit pool and no midnight reset.

Automatic Mode Strategy

Automatic mode is the lowest-effort path. Instead of researching accounts and hashtags, you describe your niche with content categories and let the bot find the audience.

How to use it:

  • Pick up to 5 content categories that define your niche (e.g. Fitness, Nutrition, Wellness).
  • The bot discovers relevant accounts within those categories and engages automatically.

Best for:

  • Clear, well-defined niches
  • Hands-off operators who don’t want to maintain target lists
  • New users getting started quickly

Specific Account Targeting Strategies

Strategy 1: Competitor Follower Mining

Focus: Convert competitors’ followers into your followers.

How It Works:

  • Identify 5-10 direct competitors
  • Target their followers
  • Use the “Account followers” option

Example: Fashion Brand

Target Accounts: @Competitor1, @Competitor2, @Competitor3
Targeting Option: Account followers
Minimum Following: 50 (default)

Result: Reach followers already interested in fashion

Best For:

  • Competitive industries
  • Brands with clear competitors
  • Accounts in established niches

Strategy 2: Influencer Audience Borrowing

Focus: Reach audiences of influencers in your niche.

How It Works:

  • Identify influencers your ideal audience follows
  • Target their engaged followers, or the people who like their posts
  • Use “Account followers” or “Like posts”

Example: Fitness Product

Target Accounts: @FitnessInfluencer1, @FitnessInfluencer2,
                 @FitnessInfluencer3
Targeting Option: Like posts
Minimum Following: 50 (default)

Result: Reach users engaging with fitness influencer content

Best For:

  • Product businesses
  • Brands with influencer partnerships
  • Accounts targeting enthusiast niches

Minimum Following limit: the default is 50, which helps the bot skip inactive or bot accounts. Raising it makes targeting stricter (smaller, more active audience); keep it near the default unless you have a reason to change it.

Hashtag Targeting Strategies

Add up to 20 hashtags, then choose which users under those hashtags to engage with. There are two targeting options:

  • Top posts — users who like the most popular posts under your hashtags (broad reach).
  • Users who liked top posts — users actively engaging with the top content (quality over quantity).

(Older “recent posts” and “recent hashtag” options are not part of the current product — use the two options above.)

Strategy 1: Niche Domination

Focus: Dominate a specific niche with targeted hashtags.

How It Works:

  • Research up to 20 highly relevant hashtags for your niche
  • Mix popular, moderate, and niche-specific tags
  • Use “Users who liked top posts” targeting
  • Reach users actively engaging in your niche

Example: Fitness Account

Hashtags: fitness, gym, workout, fitfam, gains,
          bodybuilding, crossfit, health, motivation,
          gymlife, exercise, fitlife, training

Hashtag Type: Users who liked top posts
Result: Reach highly engaged fitness enthusiasts

Best For:

  • Niche businesses
  • Personal brands
  • Accounts focused on specific topics

Strategy 2: Competitor Hashtags

Focus: Target audiences engaging with competitor content.

How It Works:

  • Research hashtags competitors use
  • Include their branded or campaign hashtags
  • Target users engaging with competitor content

Example: Local Coffee Shop

Competitor Tags: #CompetitorName, #CompetitorPromo
Your Tags: coffee, cafe, latte, localcoffee

Hashtag Type: Top posts
Result: Reach competitor's engaged customers

Best For:

  • Local businesses
  • Competitive industries
  • Brands with direct competitors

Combined Targeting Strategies

You can run Specific Account targeting and Hashtag targeting at the same time for refined reach.

Strategy: Hashtag + Competitor Accounts

Focus: Hyper-targeted competitor audience within a topic.

Example: Yoga Studio

Competitor Accounts: @CompetitorStudio1, @CompetitorStudio2
Hashtags: yoga, wellness, meditation, mindfulness
Account Option: Account followers
Hashtag Type: Users who liked top posts

Result: Competitor's customers interested in yoga

Best For:

  • Service businesses
  • Competitive industries
  • High-ticket services

Finding Targets: Quick Summary

  • Hashtags: search Instagram for your niche keywords, see what successful competitors and influencers post, and build a relevant list of up to 20.
  • Target accounts: mid-sized accounts in your niche (roughly 10K–500K followers) with active, engaged communities tend to work best.
  • Refine over time: review your session reports, keep what works, and swap out hashtags or accounts that underperform.

Common Questions

Can I use too many hashtags? Influxie allows up to 20 hashtags. Around 10-15 well-researched, relevant hashtags is typically a good working set.

Should I target big or small accounts? Mid-sized accounts (10K-500K followers) offer the best balance.

How often should I update my targeting? Review weekly, adjust monthly. Hashtag sets can be refreshed every 2-3 weeks.

What if my targeting isn’t working?

  1. Verify your hashtags are relevant
  2. Ensure your target accounts are appropriate and not too broad
  3. Try the other hashtag type (top posts vs users who liked top posts)
  4. Try Automatic mode to let the bot discover audiences from your categories

Can I target multiple niches? Focus on one primary niche per account.

Is there location targeting? No. Influxie does not offer location or geographic targeting. Use hashtags and specific-account targeting instead.
